What is NLP?


Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), provides a number of practical ways in which you can change the way that you think, view previous life events, and approach your life, moving forward.


NLP can help you take control of your mind, and therefore your life. Unlike many psychological concepts which primarily focus on ‘why’, NLP is very practical and focuses on ‘how’.



Belief


What you believe can be extremely powerful.


If you think you’re unhealthy and that you can't do something your probably right.

Likewise, if you think that you are healthy and that you can, your also probably right.


It's a bit cliche but what this basically means is that if you believe you can do something, you probably can. But you can also challenge limiting beliefs, and change whether you believe you can do something by asking some questions like:


  • How do I know I can’t do that?

  • Who said I was unhealthy?

  • Might they have been wrong?



Goal Setting


Many of us are familiar with the principles of goal-setting however, NLP suggests some interesting new insights, focusing on satisfaction, not dissatisfaction.


For example, its beneficial to make your goals positive and focus on what you want to have, not what you’d like to lose or not have. You can also think about what it is that you really want. For example, think about your dream house..... What satisfies you more? The purchase/buying of the house or actually living in the house?


You will get more motivated about a goal that really satisfies you. This way of thinking can have a postive effect on your Health & Wellbeing.



The Power of Questions


Richard Bandler (the founder of NLP) suggests that our minds actively look for answers to questions.


So if you ask yourself ‘Why do I feel so unhealthy?’ your mind will find lots of answers and you will feel worse.

With NLP, the key is to ask the right questions, for example:

  • Why do I want to change?

  • What will life be like when I have changed?

  • What do I need to do more/less of in order to change?


Questions like these naturally lead to a more positive outlook and ultimately performance.
